theatre/Practice
instructions for Authors

Theatre/Practice publishes work presented in the Practice/Production, Pedagogy, and Playwriting Symposia of the Mid-America Theatre Conference. An open-access, peer-reviewed journal created to encourage, recognize, and amplify rigorous, high-quality scholarship, methodologies, innovations and creativity from embodied practice and practice-as-research experiences in theatre and performance.

Theatre/Practice seeks to publish essays, dialogues, accounts, plays, manifestos, field conversations, guides, interviews, etc. based on significant firsthand practitioner experiences in acting, directing, design, dramaturgy, playwriting, devising, pedagogy, or related areas.

Submissions to Theatre/Practice are usually limited to work presented at the immediate past Mid-America Theatre Conference. However, inquiries about eligibility of work presented at prior MATC conferences are also welcome.

Prospective authors/contributors/collaborators are invited to submit for the first round by June 15, 2026. *We are considering a rolling submission for responses to previous Volumes or papers from previous conferences and will communicate more on that soon.

Submissions could be expanded any of the following: publication-ready essays, plays in 10-minute formats with introductory materials, explanations of teaching methodologies presented for pedagogical considerations, or another idea that you could develop into a publishable form. *Please feel free to reach out with your ideas.

Essays should be expanded versions of papers presented at the 2026 MATC conference in Pittsburgh, PA. Multi-author contributions from roundtables, panels, theme-generated discussions are also encouraged. Playwrights are welcome to write a preface or reflection to process to provide context for submitted scripts, or to collaborate with dramaturgs, directors or
respondents on such contextual material. We would love to receive expanded notions of what defines ‘theatre scholarship’ for inclusion in a peer-reviewed, open-access journal.

After submissions, articles and artifacts will undergo mutually anonymous peer reviews (by at least one reader, preferably two) and will receive careful attention from an editor.

Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style and can be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word to Editor Karin Waidley at email address thr.practice.editor@matc.us.

Work should not be under consideration or in print elsewhere. If your manuscript or artifact is accepted for publication, it will appear in a PDF format that is available for reading online, downloading, and printing.

We encourage submissions of photographs or video to complement manuscript submissions. Photos can be embedded and off-site links to videos are welcome. Please include appropriate permissions and credits for any media.

If you have any questions, ideas or inquiries of any kind, feel free to reach out to me at
thr.practice.editor@matc.us. We look forward to receiving your submissions!
