Call for Editor
Call for Applications: Deadline Extended to July 31 2026
The Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC) is seeking a new Associate Editor for the online journal Theatre/Practice to serve a one-year term after which they would become Editor for four years. Drawing upon work presented in the Practice/Production, Pedagogy, and Playwriting Symposia of the Mid-America Theatre Conference, Theatre/Practice is an open access online journal created to encourage, recognize, and disseminate rigorous and high-quality scholarship on the practice and theory of theatre and performance. The Journal's aim is to encompass various forms of scholarship. It seeks to publish essays, documentation, dialogues, accounts, plays, or manifestos based on significant firsthand practitioner experiences of acting, directing, design, dramaturgy, pedagogy, playwriting, and devising, or on another practitioner’s work in those fields. The journal can be viewed at www.theatrepractice.us.
Associate Editor Job Description: Appointed for a one-year term, the Associate Editor works closely with the Editor in preparing issues for publication, including vetting submissions, working with the anonymous peer review process, and contributing actively to the copy-editing and production processes. The Associate Editor is appointed with the understanding that they will take over as Editor upon completion of this one-year term. Thus, this position is intended to be a training period for a position as editor. As such, it is an excellent opportunity for a scholar seeking to gain editorial experience. A graduate degree in theatre is required. Priority will be given to candidates who can secure institutional support in the form of travel funding to the annual conference and/or funding for an editorial assistant. An established history of participation and service to MATC is favorable but not required.
Term: 1 year. Position begins in July 2026. Associate Editor for Vol 16, 2027 Issue. Assumes Editor responsibilities for Vol 17, 2028 Issue.
Editor Job Description: Appointed for a four-year term, the editor is responsible for preparing one issue per year. This includes distributing a call for submissions from the Practice/Production, Playwriting, and Pedagogy symposia after the annual conference; actively encouraging submissions from under-represented populations and on diverse topics; conducting anonymous peer review; copyediting and production work; and liaising with contributors, the Associate Editor, and the Editorial Board. The Editor is encouraged to be an active and visible scholar in the field. The Editor is required to attend annual meetings of the Mid-America Theatre Conference and report on the status of the Journal at the annual business meeting. Workload varies throughout the year, but the Editor should expect to devote several hours each week to the journal during peak times (during and around MATC conference, the weeks leading up to and following annual submission deadline, and the copy editing and production weeks). A graduate degree in theatre is required. An established history of participation and service to MATC is favorable, but not required.
Term: 4 years ending upon the release of the 2031 issue.
If you have any questions or you would like to be considered, please send a one-page letter of introduction detailing your interest and qualifications for the position along with a current CV to Search Committee Chair Macy Jones (vicepresident@matc.us). Applications are due July 31, 2026.
